My Sisters Choice Quilt
My Sisters Choice Quilt
Hello! My name is Sharon and I am thrilled to share my first project for Moda Bake Shop. Quilting, art journaling, gardening and grandchildren occupy most of my time. I have been published in 2 books, Art Journal Kickstart and From Cards to Canvas. You can find me on Instagram at punkydoodle53 and on my blog Camp Gramma. The inspiration for this quilt came from one of m favorite traditional blocks, Sisters Choice. When I saw a charm pack of Bandana by Me and My Sister, I knew I wanted to use it in this quilt. It could be used as a spring table topper or wall hanging, or even a baby quilt. Enjoy!
2 Bandana Charm packs by Me and My Sister
2 yards Bella Solid white (9900)
1 1/2 yards Bandana Tranquil Turquoise (22241)
For the scrappy 9 patch:
Sort out 18 charms. Cut into (72) 2 1/2" squares
Piece together to make (8) scrappy nine patch squares. Squares should measure 6 1/2"
Unit A
Background Moda Bella White cut (24) rectangles 2 1/2" x 6 1/2"
cut (16) squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
From charms cut (48) 2 1/2" squares
Make (24) units: Using a pencil and ruler, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each of the print 2 1/2" squares
Layer a print square over one end of a 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangle. Stitch on the drawn line. Press and trim the corner triangle . In same manner, sew, press, and trim to the other end of the rectangle, placing it in a mirror image as shown
Using the Unit A's make the following sets following the images.

Make (8) of these: Unit A3
Unit B

From charms cut (8) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares
Using a pencil and ruler, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each of the print 2 1/2" squares
Layer a background square to print square and stitch on the drawn line. Trim away leaving a 1/4" seam to make a half square . Press open.
Make (8) units like this.
Unit C
Background Moda Bella White cut (8) 6 1/2" squares
Charms cut (8) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each of the print 2 1/2" squares. Layer a square on one corner of the 6 1/2" square. Stitch on the diagonal, trim to 1/4" seam, and press open. Make (8) units like this
Assembling the block
Make (4) blocks
Sew unit B to unit C as shown:
Sew unit A2 to the unit you just made as shown:
Make (8) sections like this.
Next section is made as follows:
Sew unit A to a scrappy 9 patch as shown in diagram.
Sew unit A3 (this has a print square on one end) to the scrappy 9 patch unit as shown.
Now you will take all the sections you just made and sew the block together as shown:
Make (4) blocks
Piecing the quilt center
Referring to the photo layout the four 16" blocks to form a square. Sew together. The pieced quilt center should measure
32 1/2" x 32 1/2"including seam allowances.
Inner Borders
From Moda Bella Solid White, cut (8) 2 1/2" x 16 1/2" rectangles
From charms cut (12) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.
Layer a 2 1/2" inch print square to one end of a 2 1/2" x 16 1/2" rectangle as shown in diagram. Make 4
Layer a 2 1/2" inch print square to one end of a 2 1/2" x 16 1/2" rectangle as shown in diagram. Make 4.
Sew together as shown:
Make 4 units. They should measure 2 1/2" x 32 1/2". Sew two of these units to the sides of the quilt top.
To two of the units, add a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" print square to each end. Sew these units to the top and bottom of the quilt.
Pieced quilt should now measure 36 1/2" x 36 1/2".
Outer Border
These strips are cut from the length of the fabric.
From the border print cut (2) strips 4 1/2" x 36 1/2" and (2) strips 4 1/2" x 44 1/2".
Sew the 4 1/2" x 36 1/2" strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Sew the 4 1/2" x 44 1/2" strips to the sides of the quilt as shown in the diagram.
Completing the Quilt
Layer quilt top with batting and backing. Quilt as desired.
For Binding cut (4) 2 1/2" x LOF strips. Sew into one length and use to bind the quilt.
One 44 x 44 quilt. As you can see, this block can be set in more than one way and more could be made to create a larger quilt. Have fun playing with this block!
