Happy 2018!  Happy January!  Did you have a lovely holiday?  It's been quite cold here - relatively speaking.

Meaning, it's freezing cold to me!  But to friends in Illinois, Nebraska and elsewhere... not so much.

I'll bet Betsy's cold.  That's why she made so many itty-bitty half-triangle squares.  She figured that standing over the iron pressing all of the little pieces would help keep her warm.

This is Lawyer's Puzzle - also known as the Barrister's Block.  (Depending on your block book.)  As always, the background is from Snowberry by 3 Sisters, as is one of the blue prints.  I'm starting to lose track of the others as the scraps get smaller and smaller.  Both red prints are by Minick & Simpson, one of the gold prints is Rue Indienne by French General.

While going through my box of scraps, I found some leftover half-triangle squares so with what was left from piecing the first block, I made another.  Slightly different.

I think I mentioned several month ago that I am going to need sixty-four blocks for my setting so I've been making extras along the way.  The setting can easily be done with one less row and forty-eight blocks but... I like square quilts.

We'll be sharing our settings on January 31st along with the last of the Blockhead blocks.  Which reminds me... I need to get busy writing up the cutting and calculating the extra yardage.  And I need to count my flying geese to see if I've made enough!

Question of the Week ~ Do you make New Year's Resolutions?  A word for the year?

No.  And yes.  That means I think about it... write out some goals, plan for the year but is it really a "resolution?"  I prefer to think of it as "creating new habits"... and that's mostly about baby-steps.  For this year, I have a list based on Gretchen Rubin's 18 for 2018 - it's something she talks about on her podcast, Happier with Gretchen Rubin.  (Gretchen wrote the book The Happiness Project.)

I have divided it up with some personal "taking care of me" goals - Eat healthier. Get more sleep.  Yeah, yeah... be more consistent about regular exercise.  I have a couple of quilt-related goals - projects to finish, a couple of quilts I really want to make and a few new techniques I want to learn.  Along the way, I'm cleaning out drawers, closets and clutter.  Small, manageable tasks - at least two drawers a week.

As for a word of the year... I'm going with hygge.  Pronounced "hue-gah" or "hoo-gah" depending on whom you ask.  It's a Danish concept-idea that can't be translated literally into a single word.  Instead it encompasses a feeling of contentment, coziness and well-being that comes from enjoying the simple things in life.  The description that I like is that it "only requires a conscious appreciation, a certain slowness, and the ability to not just be present – but recognize and enjoy the present."

My favorite thing about hygge might be that there is actually a word for "stretchy-pants"!   "Hyggebukser" are that pair of pants you'd never be caught dead wearing in public, but practically live in when you're at home on the weekends.  What's not to love?
